Each time Patty Borthwick sees positive change in the wake of her daughter’s death by suicide, she thinks, “There you go, Hil, you’re going to help another family.”

At 27 years old, Hillary Hooper died by suicide while she was admitted to the psychiatric unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital in 2020.

During the inquest into Hooper’s death, presiding coroner Emily Caissy recommended the province create a suicide fatality review committee — to review cases where a person died by suicide and make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

“Hillary has done a lot of good … I think people need to keep in mind that she was a person,” Borthwick said in an interview.
