Six new officers would be hired for the vulnerable persons unit under the budget proposed for next year by the Codiac Regional Policing Authority.
The authority, which oversees policing in Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe, presented its proposed spending plans to Moncton city council on Monday night.
The $69.4 million budget would include $1.1 million to increase staffing in the vulnerable persons unit, which works on crimes such as sexual assault, human trafficking and domestic violence.
“The team that’s currently working on those types of files do not have enough resources, and their workload is too much,” said Supt. Benoit Jolette, commanding officer for the Codiac Regional RCMP.
