Experience Unfunctional, a new exhibition from the Ceramics program at NBCCD that challenges traditional ideas of form and purpose.

On display from April 9 to 29, 2026, at the George Fry Gallery, Unfunctional features work by 18 artists, including students, faculty, and technicians. Together, these works explore what happens when function is no longer the primary focus, and creative expression takes the lead.

Rethinking Function

Ceramics has long been rooted in utility. In Unfunctional, artists move beyond these expectations and are tasked with creating work that is inherently unfunctional. Experimenting with form, scale, texture, space, and concept, discover imaginative works that prioritize expression, whimsy, and material exploration.

Through a range of techniques and approaches, the exhibition highlights the versatility of clay as a medium and invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between function, aesthetics, and meaning.

Ceramics is a two-year, four-semester program that focuses on skill building and technical proficiency. A strong emphasis is placed on professionalism throughout the program. Students begin the program not only learning how to throw on the pottery wheel, but also learning about the wide range of ceramic materials used. Students study historical and contemporary examples to guide their aesthetic development.
