Written almost entirely alongside longtime collaborator Tavish Crowe, the album follows a character emerging from a difficult period, initially focused on returning to the life she had before, then gradually questioning whether that past still has a place in her future. As the perspective shifts throughout the record, the album moves from the immediacy of difficult emotions to hindsight, accountability, and a clearer understanding of the role she played in remaining attached to the past. “I didn’t realize I was making a concept album until we were already in it,” shares Penalva. “The songs started to tell this story of wanting to go back to who I was, and then realizing that version of my life didn’t serve me anymore.” Expanding Penalva’s pop foundation to incorporate elements of folk, adult contemporary, and rock, the album introduces instruments that typically remain outside the confines of pop music, like banjo, acoustic guitars, saxophone, and stripped-back arrangements. Focus track “Getting Out Of Dodge,” is the album’s natural closer and the song that brings the project full circle, capturing the moment of making the choice to leave the past behind and move forward. Written as the final addition to Exit Wounds, the track builds on the album’s recurring references to leaving, turning uncertainty into something exciting and freeing. Beginning with piano before opening into Folk-inspired banjo, full-band production, and one of Penalva’s biggest choruses to date, the song moves seamlessly between intimate verses and an anthemic energy designed to mirrors the momentum behind its lyrics. “Getting Out Of Dodge” intentionally ends in the middle of its bridge, reinforcing the idea that moving forward may not always require knowing exactly where the journey will lead. Other songs on the album include the title track, “Exit Wounds,” a folk-leaning pop song about the guilt that can come with moving on from a person or situation that once meant everything. Introducing new musical elements into Penalva’s sound like the banjo, the song became an early indication of the sonic direction the album would take. The first single from the project, “Distance Makes A Love Story,” is a self-reflective journey of growth framed as a love story. Blending romantic warmth and quiet self-reckoning, the upbeat and catchy pop track alludes to questions about romantic love on the surface while holding a deeper double meaning, where the character in the song wonders if they can still be accepted after changing. Previously released single “Code Blue,” explores the loss of identity that can follow heartbreak, capturing the desperation of trying to reconnect with oneself once a relationship ends. A more hopeful perspective arrives on “Daisy Says,” where Penalva reminisces about her previous experiences while recognizing the person she has become, with its final chorus celebrating the idea that growth and change are still happening every day. “Waiting Rooms,” the only song written solely by Penalva, examines the ways difficult experiences can leave someone feeling stuck long after those moments pass, questioning if staying in those experiences is a choice.
