Bat Appreciation Month: The Nature Trust’s Efforts to Protect Bats and Restore Populations

With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate Bat Appreciation Month! Often seen as ‘spooky’ creatures for their beady eyes, distinct wings and habit of hibernating in dark caves, did you know that bats are actually essential pollinators?🦇🌷
Unfortunately, these amazing animals are in decline across the globe due to threats of human activity and a fungal disease called white-nose syndrome. The Nature Trust is doing our part in the fight to restore bat populations by participating in the Canada-wide BatBox Project.
Grace MacLean, our Stewardship Technician, installed these bat boxes at Hyla, Ferris Street, and Noremac Nature Preserves this summer. Our amazing stewards help monitor the boxes so we can identify the number and species of bats returning to our preserves and the province! 🙌
If you’ve made a bat sighting, get in touch and we may be able to add it to our data! For more information on the BatBox Project, head to https://wcsbats.ca/…/Batbox…/BatBox-Project-Canada-wide
