N.B.’s Highland Games marks 43 years of family and fierce competition

New Brunswick’s 43rd Highland Games Festival is bringing Scottish culture, family traditions, and fierce competition into the heart of downtown Fredericton this weekend.
From July 24-26, Fredericton’s Officers’ Square and Government House will host a celebration of Celtic heritage, featuring bagpipe and drum competitions, heavy athletic events, Gaelic lessons, Scottish rituals, live music, and traditional and local food.
Angela Pyne, Fredericton Capital Region Tourism’s senior marketing lead, says the festival is one of the summer’s most anticipated festivals, drawing between 6,000 to 7,000 people to the city.
“This weekend alone, several of our hotels downtown are almost at capacity,” said Pyne. “It’s bringing in more people to enjoy and experience what Fredericton has to offer.”
Last year 40 per cent of attendees were from outside the Fredericton Capital Region,
