A man accused of murdering an Oromocto First Nation woman has now pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in her death, the RCMP said Thursday.

Jared Smith of Burton was originally charged in 2024 with second-degree murder after the homicide of Sheri Lynn Sabattis, 54, a member of the Wolastoqey community also known as Welamukotuk.

A brief statement from RCMP did not explain the change in the charge against Smith.

Sabattis’s body was found inside a home in the Wolastoqey community on April 27, 2024. RCMP arrested Smith the same day.
