Pope of the Holy Spirit

This is a note to my pastor that I hope will resonate with many of you.

Fr. John et al,

As we had lunch together after Mass in Canterbury, we again were speaking of Pope Francis. I had just finished the 4 part Netflix series on Pope Francis – “Call Me Francis” originally done in Spanish with English dubbing. (Despite this slight distraction of dubbing, I’d recommend it for anyone and everyone.) It gives an excellent insight into this good man’s background and formation.

As we spoke, we couldn’t help comparisons with Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul.

In these good men we had teachers very much needed. In Pope Francis we have something different, and at lunch we were having difficulty naming this difference.

 Finally the name surfaced …

… now we have a mentor, one who models both for and with us being the Church of Christ.

I believe if we can grasp fully the difference in meaning of this term “mentor” from that of teacher we will better appreciate his emphasis on discernment over pronouncement.

Again the Netflix series may help open up this meaning for you and why one might call him the Pope of the Holy Spirit …

take care

Hugh
