Vitalité Health Network is using travel nurses to keep the Campbellton Regional Hospital emergency room open, miffing politicians who want to move away from the costly practice.
“We used travel nurses when we were in a crisis during the COVID years,” said Health Minister John Dornan. “We should be able to staff our hospitals without travel nurses.”
In October, the province told Vitalité to stop involuntary deployment of New Brunswick nurses to Campbellton to fill ER vacancies. Now, the health authority said it needs travel nurses for those vacancies while new recruits undergo training.
“Working in an emergency department requires advanced critical care training, clinical supervision and a period of adjustment.” a spokesperson for the health authority wrote to CBC News.
