The New Brunswick government announced its plan Thursday for replacing the century-old George Street Middle School in Fredericton.
And the new school will be double the capacity of the old, Education Minister Claire Johnston said, with 32 classrooms, two gyms and a space dedicated to First Nations’ language and culture.
Construction of the school on the Exhibition Grounds, along Smythe and Saunders streets, will begin in spring 2027 and is expected to take about three years.
In May, the City of Fredericton completed expropriation of the Exhibition Grounds and sold 12 acres of the downtown property to the province for $7.7 million so it could build the school
The province designated $96.8 million for the project in its capital budget this year.
