Homelessness in Saint John has only grown since an update in July on the city’s strategy to reduce it, council heard Monday.

City hall’s work on the issue drew praise from councillors, but there was also concern.

“We are seeing significant increases in chronic homelessness,” Coun. Eric Savoie said.

“And while over the summer months we’ve seen lots of progress on supportive housing and affordable housing — these are all good things — we can’t take our foot off the pedal.”

According to the Human Development Council’s latest data, 304 people in Saint John experienced “chronic homelessness” in August. The month before it was 280.

The phrase refers to people who have been homeless for at least six months within the span of a year.
