New Brunswick’s minister responsible for children taken into the province’s care is reviewing what more can be done to protect them from human trafficking.

Social Development Minister Cindy Miles was responding to a story last week from CBC News, where police and service providers indicated that youth in government care are being targeted for trafficking.

As the minister, Miles is in effect the parent to more than 1,000 children and youth taken into government care for their safety, either permanently or temporarily.

Miles was given that responsibility almost two years ago.

“We know this is serious, and we know that we cannot just be satisfied … because standards and supports are in place,” she said in an interview on Monday.
