All newborns in New Brunswick will now have access to the vaccine against the common respiratory virus RSV for free.

The province announced Thursday it will pay $3.8 million to cover the cost of immunization that can run hundreds of dollars per shot.

“This is about making sure that we take pressure off of our emergency rooms and off of our hospital system,” Premier Susan Holt said.

The move to expand publicly funded immunization aims to protect New Brunswick’s “youngest and most vulnerable,” Holt said.

RSV, which stands for respiratory syncytial virus, is common during the fall into early spring in Canada.
