Birthdays are an important time in Natasha Eldridge’s household.
“I have a 12-year-old and a 7-year-old, and it’s a big deal in our house,” said the mom and former social worker.
But over the past few years, Eldridge had been thinking about how many families don’t look forward to birthdays and birthday parties because of the cost that comes along with it.
So she decided to do something about it.
“When I learned that there are some local families who cannot provide the basics or can’t afford a birthday celebration, I felt there had to be a way for the community to get together and help,” she said.
In September, Eldridge launched the Birthday Box Project to ensure that children feel “seen, celebrated and valued on their special day.”
Each box contains all the necessary supplies for an instant birthday party: a cake with icing and candles, balloons and streamers, a card, and an age-appropriate gift for the child.

The Birthday Box Project and the Happy Birthday Program work slightly differently but have the same end goal.
“We have a lot of Hot Wheels cars. We have a lot of stationery products,” she said, explaining some of the gifts that have been donated.
