The Codiac Regional RCMP plan a blitz targeting open-air drug use over the next two months.

Supt. Benoit Jolette, the commanding officer of Codiac RCMP, said Monday the blitz starting this week will involve officers in plainclothes and in uniform in areas such as downtown Moncton. Codiac also polices Dieppe and Riverview.

“This is not a campaign to throw people on the ground and say the RCMP is here to rid the streets of drug use,” Jolette told reporters.

“That will never happen. There will always be people that are addicted to drugs, and being addicted is not a crime.”

But he said police will target illicit use of drugs in public and gather intelligence about the supply of the drugs.
