By the end of a week-long firefighting camp in Hillsborough, teenage girls were pulling 200-pound men across sea containers.
Only a few days before, they’d found the idea crazy, said camp director Jessica O’Dell.
“We give you all of the tools to be able to do it,” she said in an interview with Shift. “You just have to take that leap and do it.”
O’Dell has been a firefighter in New Brunswick for 16 years. The idea to create a summer camp for teenagers interested in the profession was always there, but it wasn’t until O’Dell went to an all-women’s firefighting symposium in Ontario this year that she felt inspired to get it off the ground.
