New Brunswick’s three main cities recorded slight increases in crime rates last year in contrast with a decline reported nationally.
The crime rate, which adjusts for population, increased 0.5 per cent provincewide, data released by Statistics Canada shows.
Larger increases were recorded in the province’s three main cities, where crime was a major issue in recent municipal elections.
The crime rate rose 5.7 per cent in the Moncton region from 2024, 3.3 per cent in the Saint John region, and 5.7 per cent in the Fredericton region. The national crime rate dropped 2.4 per cent.
Despite the increases, crime rates remain below previous highs. Moncton, for example, is still below its 2021 peak.
