The jury in a coroner’s inquest into the death of a 48-year-old man in police custody in Moncton has recommended that police stations have on-site paramedic care and biometric sensors that measure changes in the respiratory and heart health of detainees.

Codiac RCMP detained a severely intoxicated Dennis Johnson late on the evening of Nov. 19, 2022 after he had been seen staggering down a Moncton residential street and had refused treatment from paramedics.  

He was expected to be kept overnight and released once sober. However, Johnson had ingested so much alcohol and sedatives that he was found unresponsive in his cell in the middle of the night.
