Hampton council voted this week against a controversial zoning amendment that would have allowed a scrap and salvage yard in Bloomfield.

Residents had made it clear to council they didn’t want the scrapyard proposed for a three-acre site (1.3-hectare) in the rural Kings County community that now falls within the municipality of Hampton.

Council first considered the rezoning in the spring, but after residents pushed back, staff were asked to come back with revisions. These were rejected in a vote this week.

“It was a nail-biter,” said Krista Bietz-Bielecki, who led the opposition to the rezoning and saw the vote as a positive outcome.
