Federal funding has brought in a new community officer for Sitansisk First Nation to address gaps in existing policing. 

Sitansisk, also known as St. Mary’s, is currently policed by the Fredericton Police Force, unlike other New Brunswick First Nations, which are often policed by the RCMP.

But a new position is aimed at working alongside those existing police services. 

Known as a “community program officer,” the role was announced in the agenda documents for Fredericton city council’s meeting Monday night.

It was added to the consent agenda, meaning that it was not discussed by council at all during the public meeting.

The new officer will conduct “visibility patrols to identify safety concerns and emerging risks” and will support crime prevention and education initiatives around family violence,
