Kehkimin Wolastoqey language immersion school has a new reading option for Indigenous children.

The school, located in Fredericton, opened in 2022 with one overarching goal: kids will learn Wolastoqey as their first language before choosing whether they want to learn French and English.

Published by Moncton-based Bouton d’or Acadie, Yut nit Weceyawit Wolastoq (The Birth of the Wolastoq River) was written by Wolastoqey language translators Roseanne Clark and Robert Leavitt with help from editors Lisa Perley-Dutcher and Stephen Dutcher.

It was illustrated by Christina Brière.
