Where to Watch the Sunset in New Brunswick This Week

Summer sunsets in New Brunswick are worth planning your evening around right now. The sun is setting close to 9:15–9:20 pm this week, and with long, warm evenings on tap (with a better chance of showers creeping in by Thursday and Friday), you’ve got a solid window most nights to catch the sky put on a show. Here’s where to point the car.

1. St. Andrews by-the-Sea

This Passamaquoddy Bay town is made for evening light. Grab a spot along the waterfront downtown, or time a walk out toward Ministers Island — just don’t linger too long, since the causeway out there floods with the tide and you don’t want to be stuck explaining that to a tow truck. The sunsets here have a reputation for being especially vivid, so it’s a good idea to plan dinner around them rather than the other way round.

2. Hopewell Rocks

If you want a sunset with some geology thrown in, this is the spot. The ideal move is catching low tide right around sunset, which lets you walk the ocean floor among the sea stacks and find angles looking back through the formations for dramatic, glowing shots. Check the tide tables before you go — Fundy’s tides are famously extreme, and the window for walking the flats is limited.

3. Fundy National Park — Herring Cove Lookout

For a big, uninterrupted view of the bay, head to Herring Cove Lookout inside Fundy National Park. As sunset approaches, the wide-open view over the bay turns pink and orange — one of those spots where it’s worth arriving a little early just to watch the light change, rather than rushing in right at golden hour.

4. Cape Enrage

A bit more rugged and a bit less crowded than Hopewell Rocks, but with similarly dramatic cliffs over the bay. The towering cliffs here give some of the best views of the Bay of Fundy’s famously high tides, and that same elevation makes for a wide-open sunset horizon if you time it right.

5. Saint John — Reversing Falls & the Harbour

If you’re staying closer to the city, the waterfront around the Reversing Falls area is an easy, no-planning-required option. It won’t have the same drama as the cliffs further down the bay, but it’s a solid pick for a casual evening — good for grabbing dinner nearby and letting the sky do its thing while you eat.

6. Cumberland Bay and the Miramichi River

Don’t overlook the inland river spots — some of the best sunset photos shared by locals come from right along the water here rather than the coast. Readers around the province have sent in shots from Cumberland Bay and near Miramichi that rival anything you’ll get on the Fundy shore, and they’re a lot closer if you’re up around Fredericton or the Miramichi area.

Quick tips for this week:

  • Sunset is landing around 9:15–9:20 pm through the week, so plan to arrive 20–30 minutes early to catch the full color build-up.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday look like your clearest, driest evenings — Thursday and Friday carry a better chance of clouds and showers rolling in.
  • If you’re chasing a Fundy shot (Hopewell Rocks or Cape Enrage), check the tide schedule first — low tide near sunset is the sweet spot.
  • Bring a light layer. Evening air off the bay cools down fast even on a warm day.
