It’s been over a year since Saint John decided to compel owners of apartment buildings with at least four units to bring recycling to their tenants.

But many larger buildings still haven’t registered for the free service.

“It is the requirement of the property owners to sign up for the service on behalf of their tenants,” Tim O’Reilly, the city public works director, said.

The bylaw was approved by council in April 2025 after a low number of buildings were initially registered for recycling services offered by the non-profit Circular Materials.
