Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin met with local officials in Rogersville on Wednesday to discuss community concerns that recent wildfires may be tied to trains running along tracks owned by CN.

Reporters were not allowed into Gauvin’s meeting with Jimmy Bourque, the mayor of Nouvelle-Arcadie, which includes Rogersville, and fire Chief Roger Pitre.

But afterward, Gauvin said his goal coming to the community was to understand the stress that people were feeling about the recent fires.

“So that’s why we’re here, to listen and try to see what we can do going forward,” Gauvin said.

Any mitigation done to prevent similar fires will depend on what’s determined by a provincial investigation into the fires and the possible link to passing trains,
