A piece of land near Shediac that was a cemetery in the late 1700s and is believed to have dozens of unmarked graves has been bought by a local heritage group.

The committee created by La Société Historique de la Mer Rouge Inc. to press for preservation of the site in Cap Bimet raised almost $200,000 for the purchase.

Stella Boudreau, the head of the committee, said people buried on the site, about one acre off Route 133, include ancestors of many families in the area. Some are Acadian and some Mi’kmaw families.

“We felt that it was important, you know, to keep the memory of them being buried there,” Boudreau said.
