Fredericton voters elected a four-term councillor to be the city’s next mayor on Monday, following a campaign heavily dominated by concerns around crime and public safety.
After 18 years sitting at the council table, Steve Hicks will move up to the mayor’s chair following an election that saw him win by a healthy margin against his main competitor, former MP Jenica Atwin.
Polls closed at 8 p.m., and by about 10:30 p.m., the final results showed Hicks had secured 53.3 per cent of the votes, compared to Atwin, who secured 44.8 per cent.
