Featuring an indie rock sound with a raw, contemporary folk-pop edge, Montreal-based artist, Julie Neff, continues to establish herself as a compelling voice in Canada’s alternative landscape. Her music blends smoky, emotionally charged vocals with vulnerable songwriting that chronicles heartbreak, resilience, and self-reckoning so relatable it’s as if she knows exactly who is listening. Drawing comparisons to artists like Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, and Florence + The Machine, Neff’s work moves fluidly across genres, balancing softness with grit and restraint with release, often within the same breath. Building steadily over the past several years, Neff has earned early support from The Strombo Show and CBC’s q, while critical praise from outlets like Great Dark Wonder, Eat North, and Canadian Beats has highlighted her genre-blending instincts and growing artistic confidence. Her previous EP Over It showcased a sound unbound by traditional indie rock constraints, leaning into expansive, contemporary arrangements while maintaining her signature emotional core. Stepping into her most fully realized era yet, leading into her forthcoming full-length album fine. (July 2026), a project that further explores the emotional complexities and sonic versatility that have come to define her as an artist.
Her latest single, “TRAPPED,” out Friday, May 8, 2026, navigates chronic illness and the disorienting feeling of being physically and emotionally stuck. Inspired by a haunting story of someone unable to find their way out, later reflected Neff’s own reality with the challenges of her own chronic illness. Capturing the frustration of having ambition and desire without the ability to act on it, “TRAPPED” is an unfiltered expression of what it means to feel trapped in your own body while searching for a way through.

About “TRAPPED?”:
Grounded in lived experience, Julie Neff’s “TRAPPED” captures the dissonance of wanting more from life while feeling physically and emotionally held back. Written during lockdown while living in B.C. and navigating the realities of chronic illness, the song was sparked by a story about memory and disorientation, but quickly revealed itself as something far more personal as Neff navigated the realities of living with endometriosis. Reflecting the frustration of being full of ideas, energy, and desire, yet unable to act on them, “TRAPPED” chronicles the devastating and unpredictable reality of living with chronic health issues, where the physical body is unable to meet the will of those suffering. Musically, the track moves like that experience itself, shifting between sparse, intimate moments and powerful, unrestrained releases. Neff’s vocal performance stretches from near-whispers to full-bodied, cathartic, almost guttural belts that take the listener to the depths of the artist’s despair. Designed to recognize where those suffering are in the moment without applying a positive spin, Neff intentionally refrained from adding a silver-lining, noting that she, herself finds comfort in music that meets her where she is at.
The captivating video builds on that tense frustration through movement, centering on a dancer who embodies the freedom and expression Neff felt disconnected from at the time. Developed through a period of personal rebuilding and collaboration with a choreographer, the visual explores the contrast between the internal struggle and what the body can physically access, capturing the fragility and strength within that space. Together, the song and video offer an honest reflection of feeling stuck without resolution, creating space for listeners to see themselves in it and, ultimately, feel less alone.
Quote: “‘TRAPPED’ came from a songwriting challenge where I was prompted to write about an elderly woman with dementia and how she must have felt, but later flowed into my own story. When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness I had a new understanding of having all this energy, ambition, and emotion, but nowhere for it to go. I didn’t want to tie it up with a neat ending; I wanted it to feel like that tension, that frustration, and that release when you finally let it out.” – Julie Neff
