Moncton council gave initial support Monday to revised rules for new subdivisions that call for narrower streets, more sidewalks and other changes aimed at reducing tree cutting.
City staff presented the updated guidelines for subdivision developments during a committee meeting.
René Lagacé, Moncton’s director of engineering, said one notable change calls for new local residential streets to be 7.5 metres wide instead of 10 metres.
It’s a change he said that aims to be better for the environment by reducing the area covered by asphalt, reduce construction costs and slow drivers.
“By narrowing the streets at the development stage, we think it is one of the best approaches to calm traffic on our streets,” Lagacé said.
