Some nature enthusiasts in Moncton gave birds a helping hand this weekend.

Volunteers at Nature Moncton monitored and cleared wooden nesting boxes — small enclosed structures that act as replacement habitat for natural tree cavities.

Fred Richards, past president and current board member of Nature Moncton, says the nesting box project started eight years ago to help combat the decline in insect-eating birds such as tree swallows.

“It’s our belief that [the decline] has a lot to do with loss of habitat, so we are providing habitat by putting these boxes up in areas where the birds are known to be.”
