The Holt government’s recent budget talk about closing small schools amounts to a refresher on an existing policy designed to give the public a say.

A pre-budget discussion paper asked for public input on the idea of closing schools with fewer than 100 students, a scenario that Finance Minister René Legacy confirmed in his March 17 budget speech.

But that merely restates an obligation that the province’s seven district education councils already have.

“It made it sound like they were going to out-and-out close schools without any hearings or stuff,” said Robert Fowler, the former chair of the Anglophone South District Education Council.
