Andrea Bear Nicholas has been working away — here and there — for over 21 years to capture the history of Bilijk, also known as Kingsclear First Nation.

The book, titled Bilijk, documents the community’s history in chronological order from the 1780s to 1950.

It’s the sum of oral traditions, archival documents, paintings and photos that Bear Nicholas, a historian, has gathered over decades.

Bear Nicholas said some of what she has found was shocking.

“It’s just horrendous to see that parents of children who didn’t go to school would be put in jail or fined,” said Bear Nicholas,
