The Fernhill Cemetery Company asked to make some land by Rothesay Avenue available for potential commercial use. (City of Saint John)
Saint John city council approved two pieces of land Monday night for commercial use, although one member questioned why housing wasn’t a consideration for one property.
The first application came from the Fernhill Cemetery about land in the business-lined Rothesay Avenue area.
The second came from Origins Natural Learning Childcare in the Millidgeville neighbourhood.
Both aimed to change the land designation and zoning conditions so the site owners can sell the properties for commercial use, according to staff reports.
An under-used portion of the cemetery will be redesignated from a park and natural area to a commercial area.
Mayor Donna Reardon said the changes were positive for the city’s growth.
