A total of 20 encampments have been removed from areas of Saint John where they’ve been banned, city hall staff say.

City council got a brief update this week on progress removing the encampments as part of the Housing for All strategy to reduce homelessness.

“The Housing for All report tonight certainly shows improvement,” Coun. Gary Sullivan said of the one-page update submitted as an infographic for Monday night’s council meeting.

At the last update in early December, Sullivan complained staff showed a lack of urgency and data about the challenges removing tents from areas known as “red zones.”

The December update also removed clear deadlines to removing the encampments from the red zones created last September with a goal of having the tents gone by Nov.
