A 24-year-old Sackville man has been sentenced to four years in a federal prison for the fatal stabbing of Shawn Mitton.

A Moncton court heard Monday how Tyler Murphy stabbed Mitton multiple times with a knife on Lorne Street in Sackville on March 16, 2024.

In sentencing Murphy for manslaughter, Court of King’s Bench Justice Robert Dysart said there were mitigating factors in the case, including video evidence that Mitton provoked the altercation.

“The Crown concedes that there was an element of provocation in this case, where Mr. Mitton was the instigator of the altercation,” Dysart said.

Tyler Murphy and his brother Dylan Murphy were both originally charged with second-degree murder, but the charge against Dylan were dropped on March 27,
