Rosemary Lawton’s “Canvas” Honours Her Traditional Foundations, While Creating A Sound All Her Own.
Award winning Eastern-Canadian musician, Rosemary Lawton, has announced the release of her brand-new album, “Canvas”, set to launch on May 28th 2021.
Rosemary Lawton is well known within the Eastern Canadian music scene as a Traditional/Celtic artist, champion of women’s rights, and a skilled musician. The winner of the MusicNL Award for Celtic/Traditional Artist of The Year in 2019, Lawton has received multiple MusicNL nominations, and has also been nominated for an East Coast Music Award in the Roots/Traditional category.
“Canvas” marks Lawton’s departure from the Traditional/Celtic scene, and firmly plants her in the folk/pop world with elements of her traditional roots throughout. Having written her own music privately for years, Lawton decided it was finally time to release her own original songs and looked to the music she enjoys most as she crafted her sound. With degrees in both music education and violin, Lawton approached what she considered to be her blank musical slate, or “Canvas”, with melodies and ideas collected from a lifetime in music. “I have always been known as Rosemary the fiddle player, and not Rosemary the songwriter”, Lawton recounted. Following her three traditional albums, Rosemary Lawton’s first ever original album release deals with topics ranging from empowerment and mental health, to love and the importance of staying in the present.
The first single off of the project, “Little Fires” is a song inspired by and created for the underdog. Blazingly empowering and creative, the song encourages people everywhere to speak up for themselves, and look out for those who may not have a voice. “This song began as a feminist anthem, but then evolved into a song of empowerment for any person who feels trodden upon. It is a song for the little guy; the marginalized.” The song features gripping harmonies, dark piano chords, and showcases Lawton’s skilled vocal talent.
The song “Gasping” sheds light on mental health and feelings of being trapped, inspired by Lawton’s personal journey with those feelings after taking on a work position that called for her to be away from family and friends for nearly a year. “Like It Was Yesterday” was initially inspired by a classic Eastern Canadian snowstorm in early 2020. The massive, record breaking snowfall forced St. John’s into a complete shutdown, just weeks before COVID would do the same thing. Residents began putting up their Christmas lights as a sign of unity. “The chorus of this song is something that many people are aching for: to be held like the before times; to be able to greet friends with a hug, and console loved ones like we could before.”
Rosemary Lawton’s first original project marks the growth of a known and talented artist who is ready to share her life experiences through music. Her years of private song writing and touring have all culminated-on Lawton’s “Canvas”, her empty page, now filled with brilliantly creative and inspiring music.
“Canvas” will be available everywhere on May 28th 2021.
