🏺In this course students can expect to learn basic throwing and decorating skills.🏺
Students will learn how to centre clay, throw basic forms such as bowls and tumblers, add attachments including handles to make a simple mug, and learn decorating techniques including carving, stamping and painting with underglazes. The final class will include a glazing workshop in which students will dip their bisque fired work into glazes formulated and mixed by the instructor. All firings will be done by the instructor.
Curriculum:
Week 1: Learning to center and throw
Students will learn to center their clay and throw a basic bowl shape. They will learn the pottery making process and get familiar with the pottery studio. Students can expect to make a basic pinch pot for their first project.
Week 2: Throwing a basic cylinder and continuing throwing
Students will learn how to throw a basic cylinder shape which is the shape for mugs, vases and tumblers. Students can work on throwing cylinders and bowls during their free time in class.
Week 3: Trimming and Decorating
Students will now have plenty of pots to trim and learn various decorating techniques. They will learn how to trim both on and off the wheel and choose the method that suits them best or both. They will learn how to carve designs, stamp, and add texture to their pots. The remainder of the class will be used as free time for students to throw more pots or work on decorating their pots.
Week 4: Attachments and handles.
Students will attach handles to their pots to create mugs! They can also use this technique to attach knobs and decorative pieces to their work. This will be the last class for throwing any new work and all work thrown prior to this point should be finished by the end of class.
Week 5: Pottery Painting night
Students will finish any work from the previous week and get painting with underglazes. A variety of painting techniques will be shown.
Week 6: Waxing and Glazing
Students will learn how to wax and glaze their bisque fired pots with the studio glazes provided by the instructor. The pots will then be fired by the instructor and a pick up date will be provided at the end of class.
