Police in New Brunswick have seized more than eight million illegal cigarettes so far this year, surpassing last year’s numbers, according to a team looking into illegal tobacco sales in the province.
The government says several investigations led to the seizure of unstamped cigarettes, multiple arrests and criminal charges.
The illegal cigarettes represented a loss of provincial tobacco tax revenue of $3.72 million.
“There’s a lot of money in this,” Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin said Wednesday at a Fredericton announcement about the tobacco investigations.
“We don’t know what the ceiling is, we just know there’s more.”
