Jurors in a Moncton double-murder trial resumed deliberations Monday after failing to reach a verdict over the weekend.

Deliberations halted around 8 p.m. Sunday and resumed around 9 a.m. Monday in Janson Baker’s trial.

The 29-year-old from Moncton faces two counts of first-degree murder. It’s alleged he killed Bernard Saulnier, 78, and his wife Rose-Marie Saulnier, 74, on Sept. 7, 2019.

Baker’s trial began two months ago and heard from more than 30 witnesses.

The Crown’s case alleged Baker was hired by a drug trafficking group to kill the couple’s son, Sylvio Saulnier, who lived with them.

Instead, the Crown alleges that after Baker broke in he herded the couple into a bedroom and shot them once each in the head.
